Doctors have long known that one side effect of Accutane, a leading anti acne medication, was elevated cholesterol and triglycerides. However, new evidence published in the Archives of Dermatology indicates that these effects are much more widespread than thought.

Sorry, it’s just not true that you can mooch opies (other peoples’ cigarettes) and not risk heart disease. The party poopers at The Lancet published research that says ALL forms of tobacco use increase the odds of heart disease, especially for men. Researchers at the University of Washington found a connection between night eating and type 2 diabetes. Briefly, if you consume more than 1/4 of your calories after dinner, you are 2 to 3 times more likely to develop diabetes.
Sound implausible? The underlying cause is thought to be emotional connections to eating, especially as a response to stress. The treatment is “cognitive behavioral therapy”. In other words, getting to grips with your lifestyle and its underlying habits and purposes. Check out more from Reuters Health.

Authors Reeves and Rafferty report in the Archives of Internal Medicine (vol 165, 2005) that in their survey of 153,000 adult Americans in 2000, only 3% practice the healthy lifestyle as they defined it. That’s non-smoking, exercise 5 or more times per week, 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and a body mass index in the healthy 18.5 to 25 range. Wow. See article.
