A Walk A Day Helps Keep Colds Away
Cold and flu season is upon us but the good news is that research published in November’s issue of the American Journal of Medicine suggests that regular moderate exercise can prevent common colds. Cornelia M. Ulrich, an associate member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and her colleagues found that older women who took a half-hour walk each day for a year reported half the number of colds as women of similar age who didn’t exercise. “I think it is another set of data that now adds to the growing awareness that one of the most powerful ways of keeping your sick days down is to do nearly daily [physical] activity,” says David Nieman, a veteran researcher of the exercise/colds connection.
