UCLA to World: Dieting Does Not Work

April 25th, 2007

We who are part of the Hilton Head Health Institute have been saying this for years, but you don’t have to take our word for it (as a weight loss spa, we are a bit biased):  research announced by a team at UCLA shows that diets do not work.

Yes, you can lose weight by dieting.  And any number of diets work for that.  But overwhelmingly, people who lose weight through diets put it back on.  In fact, you may be worse off for dieting because you put your body through the strain of the diet, with no permanent weight loss as a compensation.  Yo-yo dieting is a lose-lose situation: lose weight short term and then lose the healthy lifestyle battle longer term.

No surprise to us, but the researchers conclude with a boost for the healthy lifestyle.  Eating nutritious controlled calorie meals (all of them) with lots of appropriate exercises (that is, right for you) is the long term solution.
