Researchers Predict 75% of Adults Overweight in 2015

July 20th, 2007

A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University systematically reviewed 20 other studies of obesity and concluded that 75% of Americans will be overweight by 2015.  Fully 41% will be obese, and 24% of children overweight.  These findings are reported in Reuters Health Information.

These figures are based on observed increases in the number of people overweight, and the trends are extrapolations.  In 2003, 66% of Americans were overweight.

One of the researchers, Dr. Wang, is quoted as saying “Obesity is likely to continue to increase, and if nothing is done it will likely become the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.”
